An existing Barco RPC video wall does not have to be replaced simply because it has aged. In certain installations, converting to RGB laser is the economically sound decision: the room, the mechanics and the viewing concept still work, and only the light source and the electronics are renewed.
At the same time, the topic deserves an honest assessment. Rear projection is no longer the standard answer for every new control room. For new builds and fundamental modernisations, LCD and LED video walls are usually the better choice today. An upgrade is a lifecycle decision — not a matter of principle.
When an RGB laser upgrade makes sense
An upgrade is particularly attractive when the room, the mechanics, the rear-projection modules and the viewing concept still fit, but the operator wants to improve running costs, maintenance effort and image stability. RGB laser light sources deliver a stable colour space over a long service life, remove lamp replacement from the maintenance schedule and reduce energy consumption noticeably.
A second argument is availability. The mechanical structure and the cubes remain in place; technicians replace the projection components and the electronics. That shortens the intervention and makes the work plannable — which matters in a control room that has to keep running during the rebuild.
When replacement is the better choice
If the room layout no longer fits, if operating processes have changed substantially, or if new sources, KVM structures and visualisation concepts are required, replacing components alone falls short. In that case the upgrade preserves a structure that no longer matches the task. Depending on viewing distance, ambient light and content, an LCD video wall or a direct-view LED wall is then the more sustainable answer.
We assess the installed base, not just the product

Modernisation without nostalgia
An RGB laser upgrade can be a good solution when it fits the installed base. It must not be chosen out of habit. We do not position ageing systems as the future — we say clearly when an upgrade pays off and when it merely postpones a decision.

How long does an RGB laser light source last?
Manufacturers state service lives in the range of tens of thousands of operating hours. Decisive for control rooms is not the peak figure but stable brightness and colour over that period, because the wall is calibrated as a single image.
Does the video wall have to be shut down completely?
No. Because the mechanical structure and the cubes remain in place, the work can usually be staged module by module. How long the intervention takes depends on the size of the wall and the available maintenance windows.
Is an upgrade cheaper than a new video wall?
Usually yes, because room, mechanics and cubes are retained. Whether it is the better decision is a separate question — it depends on whether the existing structure still matches the operating concept.
When would you advise against an upgrade?
When the room layout, the operating processes or the source and KVM architecture have changed fundamentally. In that case the upgrade preserves a structure that no longer fits the task.
